Academic Associations

English Literary Association

The English Literary Union is one of the very prestigious and well patronized Associations in the School from time immemorial.

All students from Grade 6 to Grade 13 are eligible for membership of the English Literary Union.

The English Literary Union was established to develop the knowledge of English amongst the students in school. Students showing keen interest on the Language are chosen as Office Bearers of this Union.  Events for the English Day, debating competitions and co-ordinating Drama Clubs and Media Units are some of the functions of the English Literary Union.

English day - 2015

The English day of Good Shepherd Convent, Kotahena was held on the 11th of September 2015 in the school main hall. This year The English day was based on the theme La sagesse which means Wisdom. The Chief Guest was Mrs. Champa Perera, senior lecturer in English at National Institute of Education, Maharagama.

This year the event took the form of a seminar for O/L students conducted by the Chief Guest. The students brought out their talents in the variety entertainment which followed.

We train the students to achieve a very high level of confidence in using the English language which is vital for their life.

Tamil Literary Association

The Tamil Union was formed in 1977 under the stewardship of Rev. Sr. M. Agnes de Sampayo.  The Tamil medium students of Grade 13 are eligible for membership . Office Bearers include; President, Vice-President, Secretary, Assistant Secretaries, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Editor, Assistant Editor and Class representatives who are Committee members.  The total membership is 489.

Tamil Union organizes the Tamil Cultural day annually, and friendly debates and debating competitions. It has brought forth many Singers, Dancers, Debators and Media Announcers.

Science Union

The Science Union had been formed almost four decades ago. The members of the Union are the students who opt to study Science subjects for their Advanced Level examination. The science union organizes the Annual Science Day and represents the school at Science Day functions. This year they participated in the IMU challenger's Quiz competition 2015 organized by International Medical University, Malaysia.

Political Science Club

The Political Science Club was formed under the patronage of Rev. Sr. Renuka Silva. The students of the Arts Stream hold membership in the club. Its aim is to develop speech and leadership skills among the students. This indeed is of utmost importance to face the challenges of a fast moving world.

Meetings are held once a month and the students are given the opportunity to indulge in various forms of public speaking exercises.

Sinhala Drama Club

The Sinhala drama club is actively involved in various activities to improve the skills of the students in this field. Regular workshops are conducted to train the students for the state drama festival and the inter schools drama festival organized by the Ministry of Education. The students also present dramas of very high standard at all school functions. The dramas range from simple one act plays to the more complex ones. 

The Sinhala drama club presented "Ada Wage Davasak" for the State Children's Drama Festival 2014 which won awards for stage management and script writing.

A short play titled "WACHANAYA" was presented on the VERBUM catholic channel.

"KOLOMBA THUN DENEK" was presented for the All Island Schools drama competition. Anne Harshani won the best actress award. We also won the award for characterization.

The members of the club present many original productions for most of the school events in keeping with their theme.

Sinhala Literary Association

The Sinhala Literary Association was formed in 1961, with the main intention of improving the Sinhala Language & the Literary skills of the student. 

The school Sinhala Literary Association organizes the Sinhala Literary Day annually. It opens up a pathway for the students to improve their knowledge, skills and abilities through various events such as singing, dancing and debating. 

The Association also holds competitions such as Poetry & Prose Writing which help to bring out the hidden talents of the students.

Girls Guides Association

“Be prepared” is the motto of the Good Shepherd Girl Guide movement, which was established in 1961, under the able guidance of Rev Sr Mary of Isidore Conroy. The services rendered by a Girl Guide, bears no boundaries helping others at all times organizing projects to improve knowledge and skills as well as moral values.

Some of the projects carried out by the Girl Guides were, cleaning of the Elders’ Homes at Maradana and MarcSri at Kalutara,  Christmas celebration for the needy at Nilambe – Kandy, help for the Tsunami victims, and a campfire at Kusum Sevena.

The guides participated in the Bandaranayake Challenge Trophy. One of our girl guides Navodya Perera has passed written exam of the President Guide Badge. They celebrated Christmas with Non-Christians at the Girl Guide Head Quarters.

Of the 50 guides in our company 15 are doing 1st class batches and 30 of them have passed the pre enrollment challenge. They also participated in the 3 day camp at the training center in Kadawatha.

Commerce Union

Commerce Union was established in 1986, under the leadership of Rev Sr  Rohini Mendis.  This Union comprises of students in the Commerce stream from Grade 10 upwards.  The Commerce Union organizes Speech, Essay, IQ contests, and debating competitions to celebrate Commerce Day.   The Commerce Union also participates in Inter School and Provincial Level competitions.  Seminars are conducted for Advanced Level students as part of the yearly project.

Interact Club

The Interact Club which was formed in 2008, under the able stewardship of the present Principal, Rev Sr. M Gertrude Vithanage, consists of a group of volunteer students whose aim is to fulfill the Club’s mission - “prepare the preface for a better tomorrow.” 

In the past year, the Interactors have been engaged in many Community Service Projects and School activities, with much enthusiasm.

They also participated in several interact district level meetings.

ICT Club

ICT union started in the month of January 2013 with the vision of bringing our students hand in hand into the 21st century through innovation and modern ICT technology, which will also bring students closer together and establish long-lasting, fruitful relationships based on trust and mutual respect through the powers of ICT.

The mission of the ICT union is to support the successful achievement of the students through the effective use of ICT resources.

Some students participated in the All- Island Still Graphics Competition as well as the Software Competition organized by Ananda College. They also participated in the sessions conducted at EXPO 2015 held at BMICH.

Media Club

The media club makes every effort to improve the standard of communication skills among the students.

The members were taken to Wijeya Newspapers in order to understand the processes and activities carried out in a media organization.

At present, the Good Shepherd Sisters have a center in this slum area and have established a nursery school with about 90 children, a day- crèche with around 25 children and a drop-out school with about 30 children. Women are also taught sewing and hand-work. Scouting and Guiding for the young girls and boys is also conducted here. School going children are helped with their school subjects after school hours.
